A somwhat more challenging walk in Ft. Cooper State Park (permission granted). A pristine 710 acre state park with a 160 acre beautiful lake located in Inverness, Fl. From the parking area located at N28 49.421 W082 18.998 walk (or better yet ride your bike) approx. .78 south on the Withlacoochee paved bicycle trail until you reach N28 48.760 W082 18.803 where you will see a break into the fence surrounding Ft. Cooper State Park. Enter this fence break, turn right, and continue south on the Ft. Cooper trail..More details encrypted! Ft. Cooper is lush with hammocks of sweetgum, hickory, oak and magnolia. Deer and turkey abound. The Park is named after Major Mark Anthony Cooper, commander of five companies of the First Georgia Battalion of Volunteers during the 2nd. Seminole War. In April 1836, Coopers duty was to protect the sick and wounded left behind during Gen. Winfield Scott's long march from present day Tampa. For 16 long days, Cooper and his band of 380 men held out against the Seminole Indians and finally Scott returned with supplies and reinforcements. Nearly 5 miles of self guided trails run throughout the park and lake area. The park is open to swimmers, campers, hikers, cyclists and the cost is a whopping $2.00 per vehicle (up to 8 passengers per vehicle). Spend the day (or two!!). Please respect the landscape and rehide the cache descreetly. Bring mosquito repellant!! The cache, a 50 cal. ammo box, contains the following valuable treasures.
