Geocache Description:

This cache is a tribute to the roots of Geocaching. 2004 marks the 150th anniversary of the first letterbox. It was hidden by James Perrott in 1854.

Like a traditional letterbox, this cache can be found without a GPS, although a compass may be helpful. Just follow the directions and clues to it’s location. It's pretty easy. I hid this cache in Raccoon Park in Springfield Township in Western Erie County. The coordinates are to the parking area there.

The cache has a log/stamp book, ink pad, and signature stamper. If you have your own personal stamper, stamp the cache’s log book…or just sign it. If you have your own log book, stamp it with the cache’s signature stamper.
I have also placed in the cache several small stampers as trade items. If you do not have your own stamper but would like to do more letterboxing, feel free to take one to get started. (Please do not take the ink pad or the cache’s signature stamper.)

You can find out more about letterboxing at this website (visit link)

DIRECTIONS TO THE LETTERBOX/CACHE

From the parking area, head East over the stone block wall to the clearing with the grill.
South, there is a ring of stone blocks with an opening between them.
Stand in the opening and walk 110º to the tree with the bend in the middle. (38 paces)
Walk 50º to the ‘dip’. (15 paces)
Go 110º to stand between 2 big trees. (27 paces)
Walk 50º to a ‘huge’ tree that is right next to a path. (40 paces)
Follow the path North, over a fallen tree, and stop where there are several fallen trees in front and on right of you.
Head East until you get to the next path, with power lines over head.
Continue East, upstream, to a big, uprooted tree.
Stand by the roots and look left to it’s neighbor.
