Geocache Description:

NOTE: THIS IS AN OFFSET CACHE. READ INSTRUCTIONS BELOW. Site is located in a rocky area with loose rocks on top of other rocks. It can be slippery. Slope is mild with a path that will take you very near to the border point. *****From this border point, the cache container is located 141-feet away on a true heading of 356 degrees or a heading of magnetic North. If your GPS stops working and you have a compass and tape measure, you should be able to find it. *****

During the summer of 2009 an evil person or persons unknown stole the Camak Stone. In March of 2011 some nice surveyors placed a more permanent concrete marker at the location. Evil strikes again! During the first part of 2021, some low life removed the copper plate that was placed by the surveyors. * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * A portion of the 1818 border report reads: "This boundary between Georgia and Tennessee as per the respective laws enacted in each state is described as follows: "Beginning at a point in the true parallel of the thirty-fifth degree of North latitude, as found by James Camak, mathematician on the part of the State of Georgia, and James S. Gaines, mathematician on the part of the State of Tennessee, on a rock about two feet high, four inches thick, and fifteen inches broad, engraved on the North side thus: June 1st. 1818, var. 6 3' 4" East" and on the South side thus, "Geo lat. 35 North; James Camak", which rock stands one mile and twenty-eight poles from the South bank of the Tennessee River, due South from near the old Indian town of Nickajack, and near the top of Nickajack Mountain, at the supposed corner of the States of Georgia and Alabama . . ." A portion of the 1826 border report reads: "The pillar is an integral limestone block of quadrangular form, fronting on the two sides the States of Georgia and Alabama, & bearing respectively inscriptions of the initial letters of these two names, the course of the line, variation of the compass, a date. The stone erected by the commissioners on the part of Georgia and Tennessee on the first of June 1818, about one quarter mile west of the point of intersection was removed due East and set up in contact with the corner stone above described." It was not unitl the 1826 observations that they realized that they missed the 35 degree of North latitude by more than a mile. But TN and GA had already agreed to the current latitude as their respective border. * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * This is one of eight possilbe locations in the United States where a person could be in at least three states and two time zones at the same time. The final road to the parking area was listed on maps as "Coal City Hollow Rd", however at the beginning of the cache it was marked with the name, "Beakas Way". But a current look at the map now shows it is named as "Huckabee Lane" . During my recent visit, I did not see any street sign. From the parking area, the above coordinates are approximately 375-feet away with about a 50-foot rise from the parking level. The above coordinates will take you to a marker that is not US Government approved, but the US Government has stuck it to the marker. Once upon a time you could look for a painted rock with a "T" carved into it (See Picture, but it has been stolen). The cache is a 1-quart clear plastic container with a white screw top. It contains a logbook and some trade items inside a ziplock bag. During my February 27, 2018 visit, the container had a handful of small figures. During the summer, plant growth may obscure the path from the parking area. You may have to bushwack about 15-feet into it to see the path to the border point. A February picture showing a clear pathway from the parking area is attached.
