The City of Norfolk, Virginia sponsored an art event in the
summer of 2000 that created such a stir that the city changed the
symbol of the city to the Mermaid. The project was called Mermaids
on Parade, and it raised $74,000 for the Arts program. According to
the official website there were 135 mermaids created.
This cache is designed for the remaining mermaids. All around
the City of Norfolk you can see the mermaids being displayed. To
complete this virtual cache the seeker must find 4 mermaids and
upload the images to the site with the coordinates, or e-mail
wfodder@cox.net
with the location/coordinates of the four.
The main website for the mermaids in Norfolk is
http://www.norfolk.gov/mermaids
and has pictures of most of the mermaids, however not all of them
are located where the website states.
Update: 06 Aug 09 The beginning coordinates now have have
a Mermaid. (though I am unsure which one the Library has) The
Library is now open, and you can still continue down Granby Street
and find plenty of Mermaids!
Good Luck and find the Sirens of Norfolk! I rated this 2 for
difficulty due to the travel required within Norfolk.
