Pill bottle hidden along the Blue Canyon Trail, near the Danielson home, in Big Sycamore Canyon
Richard and Molly Danielson purchased thousands of acres of ranchland (historically known as Rancho Guadalasca) in and around Big Sycamore Canyon in 1947 and built the ranch-style house and outdoor party area near this cache. In 1973, they sold the land for half ($4 million) its appraised $8 million value, and this generous gift completed the northern sector of Pt. Mugu State Park. The Rancho Sierra Vista portion, northeast of here, came under public ownership as part of the Santa Monica Mountains National Recreation Area in 1980, just as the bulldozers were ready to move in to develop the land for 800+ homes. This cache celebrates the generosity of this family in preserving this spectacular area. The Pt Mugu SP maintenance manager lives in the house now, and the party area is available for group camping by reservaton. Mr. Danielson is buried a few miles east of here, near the “Peace Love and Joy” and "Old Cabin Site/Danielson Monument" caches. GPS accuracy is problematic in this deep canyon, so take the hint along. Start at the Rancho Sierra Vista parking lot in Newbury Park or at the Big Sycamore Canyon campground on Highway 1 and expect a minimum 6 mi R/T hike or bike ride to find this cache and beautiful spot.
