Geocache Description:

Not: changed the hint 5-1-14

This cache has a very personal and special meaning to myself and my family. Kai, our 4 year old son passed away in our arms at home in 1990. This cache, placed on the Anniversary of his passage from Earth is in his memory.

Kai was an incredible spirit and taught us much about life and living. When he was 8 months old, he was diagnosed with a neuroblastoma; a malignant tumor growing on his right kidney. He passed away on September 29, 1990 at the age of three and a half. Because he very literally lived with cancer his whole life, “ordinary” was stays in the old Primary Children’s Hospital when it was located just above 11th Avenue. Not knowing how long we would be blessed with this very brave, bright and mature-beyond-his-years child, each day was to be treasured and never wasted.

We rented a home on 8th Avenue between “A” and “B” streets. There is a stone wall along “A” street at the end of 8th Ave. that shows the way to the start of a path going down into Memory Grove along City Creek Canyon. One of Kai’s favorite outings was to ride in a baby-carrier back pack as we walked down this path into Memory Grove. Along the way we would collect a pocketful of rocks varying in size from grape-sized to plum-sized.

When we reached Memory Grove Kai would stand at the edge of City Creek and throw the rocks, one at a time, into a slow-moving section of the creek. He would carefully listen to the sounds they made when they hit the water. Some would “plop”, and others would “ploop”; each sound as individual as the rock that made them.

At Kai’s graveside ceremony, we placed a basket of rocks collected from this same path and asked that each person present take one in memory of Kai. At a time of their choosing, each person was asked to throw it, either in City Creek, or any small creek that was special to them.

Those ripples have all died down, and the echoes of the “ploops” have all but disappeared from the City Creek Canyon, but the memory of Kai still burns fiercely in our hearts.

If you log this cache, you are asked to collect one small rock on the way to the cache location. Exchange it at the cache, and toss the exchanged rock into City Creek. Listen carefully to the sound . . . did it “plop” or “ploop”? As you toss it, remember someone that was special in your life. One that literally taught you the meaning of living, as our Kai did for us.

This trail can be VERY busy and the area is somewhat exposed during the winter months. Please watch for passing muggles and hide as good or better than you found it.

I would suggest parking along Avenue "A" near 8th Avenue. The walk down is pleasant, but the return trip is fairly steep.
