Legend of the White Stag Multi-Cache

This cache has been archived.

JoenGPS: It is with great reluctance that I am forced to archive this 2003 cache. It does not appear any permits are being reviewed or issued by Wharton. I hope to bring this back one day as this is one of the great legends of the pines.

Geocache Description:

The Legend of the White Stag

The “Legend of the White Stag” originates with the tale from Pine Barrens lore at a place called Quaker Bridge.

The Quaker Bridge Road was a well used stage route through the Pines. One evening just before dark and during a heavy rainstorm a stagecoach was traveling toward a tavern carrying some frightened passengers.

As the stage approached Quaker Bridge, a great WHITE STAG loomed in the center of the road. The horses reared in fright and tried to break free of the harness.

The driver, with rifle in hand, jumped to the ground and ran toward the stag. The Stag disappeared into the surrounding cedar swamp as quickly as it had appeared. The driver, along with a couple of passengers walked to where the Stag had been standing and to their astonishment and horror they found that the Quaker Bridge had been washed away by the raging Batsto River.

Had it not been for the Great White Stag, the stagecoach would have plunged into the swollen river.

From that day on. No hunter would shoot a white stag. This tale is excerpted from the book “Pine Barrens Legends, Lore and Lies” by William McMahon and can also be found in the book “Iron in the Pines “ by Arthur D. Pierce. On one of our recent travels down Quaker Bridge Road, we are confident we saw the great WHITE STAG.

I am sure if you travel to the area around Quaker Bridge and look for the WHITE STAG and IF you find him, he will guide you to the “Legend of the White Stag “ cache.
