Level terrain in the vicinity of the Solent.
The year was 1847. We had been privateering against the French and Spanish and netted a fabulous haul.
But we needed supplies so had slipped into the Solent and weighed anchor within the marshes.
No-one was allowed to go ashore, but One-eyed Pete had disregarded the Captain's order and had made his way to The Gun Inn. Here he was captured by soldiers from Hurst Castle and thrown into it's dank, dark dungeon.
It fell to me, Bow-legged Jack, to take Pete's share of the booty and offer it as ransom to the Castle Commander. I hid within it a Black Spot...anyone accepting it would suffer the Pirate's Curse. But he would not bargain with me, curse his black heart! The Captain would not allow Pete's ransom back onto the ship, due to the Black Spot, so I had to hide it deep within the marshes slimey grip.
That night, as we lay in our hammocks, we could hear Pete's screams as he was tortured to death within the castle keep. They threw his cold, ravaged body into the sea where it was washed into the marshes to rot. It is said that when the sky grows dark as a Cormorant's belly and a wild squall buffets the castle walls, you can still hear One-eyed Pete's screams on the wind.
Those coming from the sea to find this cache can make safe anchor within the harbour. Landlubbers should park at N50 43.375 W001 33.909 (SZ 30.792 91.575). Walk out into the marshes along the sea wall. But take care me hearties; better men than you have tried and failed and never returned, being swallowed up by the marsh, their bones picked clean of flesh by a plague of crabs. Should you find Pete's ransom, remember to leave the Black Spot or the Pirate's Curse will be upon you. Ha, ha, ha, ha, haaaaggghhh!
