One in a series of caches close to the summit of a Mojave Desert mountain and requiring a rocky foot ascent of at least 500 vertical feet.
This is the Mojave 500 Geocache #3. It is on the summit of Bell Mountain on the outer fringe of Apple Valley. The summit is about 3900 feet and most will start the ascent between 3100 feet and 3200 feet, for a gain of 700-800 feet. The terrain is steep and rocky. As is true of other caches in the Mojave 500 series, IT AIN'T EASY.
Bell Mountain can be climbed from any direction, and there are numerous dirt roads that lead to decent trailheads.
The cache is an ammo box.
MARCH 2011 UPDATE: I'm still around and climbing Bell Mountain about once a week. I just replaced the box (it's back to an ammo box now). Some climbers have mistook the summit register (when it's there) for the geocache- they are not the same. The summit register should be at the summit flagpole and in the open; the geocache is a little down the hill to the west and hidden.
