Geocache Description:

The cache is located in the Avery Creek section of Pisgah National Forest just off Avery Creek Trail.

Directions:
From the junction of US 64 and US 276 in Pisgah Forest take US 276 W 2.20 miles to FS 477 (Avery Creek Rd.). Turn right on FS 477 and proceed 2.38 miles to a pull off on the left side of the road, the trailhead for Avery Creek Trail is just south of Parking coordinates N 35 18.896 W082 44.954. Trailhead coordinates N 35 18.888 W082 44.946

The trail from FS 477 is a moderate steady downhill hike of .11 mile and levels off just after the cache. You will hike through hardwood forest and at times beneath a canopy of Mountain Laurel, to your right and downhill is a working beaver pond.

“Above the Beaver Pond” was placed less than 15 feet off the left side of the trail. The coordinates seemed very good and we were able to follow them back to the cache. It is tucked away at the base of the fallen giant which crosses the trail. The log has since deteriated, so leaves and old bark were placed over the cache to keep it well hidden. The cache container is a 6"x6" plastic container with a rather tight-fitting lid. Please be sure to close it completely to keep water out, and please be sure it is completely hidden when you leave it.

Please remember that animals have a much keener sense of smell than we humans. Please do not place food, candy, gum, or any other scented items such as soaps, candles or "wipes" in the cache, as animals often mistake these items as food, and will destroy the cache container trying to get to it. Also, please hide the cache container so it is not visible, so that other geocachers may enjoy the hunt. - Thanks
