Saona Rainforest Virtual Cache

This cache has been archived.

Polgara: This cache ran for 8 years. I am happy for everyone that enjoyed the trip, and logged appropriately. Tonight I am archiving this cache, on the same date it was founded.

Although I enjoyed hearing about everyone's adventures, I am tired of people logging this cache that never found it in the first place, and think they deserve a find because they were 'close'. And I am frustrated with the people that never made it to this cache, yet feel they have the right to log it, and never even send answers to the questions, I guess they feel they would rather ask for forgiveness if they got caught, well that has never worked on this cache, and it will never work on any of my caches. I find that behavior, a dis-service to those that went the extra mile to find this cache. Some people even ran down the beach and almost missed their ride back to shore. It is rated 5 stars in terrain for a reason, and allowing people to log this found, when they haven't found it is not fair.

I wanted to archive this back in April after another frustrating email back and forth, but several people told me not to, so I gave it a second chance. But I have found that this is just not fun anymore, and it must come to an end.

In the beginning, I loved this cache, I loved reading the first found it log posted by Swirlygirl, I loved the pics people posted, and I loved hearing the stories from people all over the world. But things are not the same anymore. Every time I get a log or an email on this cache, I dread reading it because over 50% of them wanted to log it found without actually finding it, despite very explicit instructions. That deletion turned into an email war at times. I'm no longer willing to subject myself to that nonsense.

For those wondering, here are the answers to this virtual. No more 'found' logs will be accepted on this cache, even backdated logs, as I have no way of knowing the truth in your efforts. Any found it logs posted after this archival will be deleted, and I will not negotiate it.

The thing at the coordinates was a tree.
On the tree was a small carving, done by one of the locals of a geocache related symbol.
You were to take a pic of this carving, and yourself and your GPS to earn the log.
The thing next to the tree was a small boat.

Thanks to everyone that made the trip, and thanks to those that followed logging requirements.

Respectfully,

Polgara

Geocache Description:

This Cache is subject to ARCHIVAL around the week of April 1, 2011. Please be aware of this if you are planning to find this cache in the near future. This cache is on exotic Saona Island, which is a beautiful National Park in the rainforest of the Dominican Republic!

The island is very primitive, & has beautiful palms, animals & rainforest. There is a variety of birds here so if you enjoy bird watching, be sure to have your binoculars. The water is crystal clear, so bring your suit & towel & take a dip with the fish or take time to relax and snack on some homemade Dominican goodies! This island holds a lot of history, hopefully your guide will elaborate on that so you can answer part four.

But, don't have too much fun, as the park closes everyday at 3pm, and by Dominican law, all people must be off the island at the time. So check with your guide that you have enough time to walk down the beach and back in order to get the cache and leave on time, and not miss your boat!

Sorry, no traditional caches and no camping here, it is illegal, government regulations prohibit an overnight stay or to leave any materials behind. This island is inspected by Dominican Authorities every day to prevent illegal immigration.

Once at the island, this virtual cache should be very easy to answer. You may post pics in your logs as long as they don't display, the verification requirements, or too much info, which will cause them to disappear. However, you can email any info or stories which you want to share!

To log it, you must email me:

What is this thing located at the coordinates?

What do you see on this thing?

A pic of what you see on this thing.

A pic of you with your GPS next to this thing.

What is sitting 2 feet next to the object at the above coordinates & what is written on it?

Tell me something about this island & your journey to it.

The only way to attempt this cache is to follow a tour agenda. Venturing on your own will generate unforseen consequences, as this island has regulations, and your guide will be the only one to ensure your safety. Therefore, be aware that this cache experience will be adventurous and exotic, but it will require you to endure expenses.

I can put you in contact with the tour guide I had if you email me, which would be a total bonus because he is aware of the cache and can provide extra hints if you need them! If you are staying at one of the resorts, the activities staff can help you get one. If your tour guide is as awesome as mine was, your journey will be accompanied by plenty of fun, dancing and rum! Mmmmm good!!!

Bushwhacking to the cache will introduce you to unforseen consequences. A peaceful walk down the beach will get you close.

Cachers have been made aware of safety precautions when searching this cache, and it should be expected that personal safety issues can arise if the above suggestions and regulations are not followed. Also, if you don't take a tour to the island, you better be a good swimmer, as there are no boats that will take you back to the mainland!
