Geocache Description:

Take a hike on an Exotic Plant Trail

Hugh Taylor Birch state Park is an oasis in the middle of busy Fort Lauderdale, Florida. Donated by Mr. Birch, the park offically opened to the public on July 1, 1949. As of 1/1/04 there is a $4.00 entry fee per vehicle, $3.00 if only one person in the car, and $1.00 if you walk in. I think most will agree it's worth it. Thanks to the park manager for approving this cache placement.

The park contains several distinct native biological communities, including the last significant remnant of a maritime hammock ( tropical hardwood forest ) in Broward county. A self guided tour takes you through the hammock, highlighting plants and historic information.

Extending north and south through the park is a freshwater lagoon system. Canoes may be rented for short trips on the lagoon. Wading birds, hawks, ducks and other wild life may be seen.

Mangroves on the west side of the park provide habitat for several species of herons and other shoreline animals. Several endangered and threatened animals and plants make the park their home inculding the gopher tortise and golden leather fern.

The park also has a 1.7 mile exercise course, along with several shaded picnic areas with playground equipment.

Birch's home which combines Spanish and Art Deco is now open as the Terramar Visitor center.

The search for the cache will take you along an exotic plant trail. You may see many unique plant and animal species along the way. It is a rubbermaid container.

I hope you enjoy the hunt!
