Geocache Description:

Our cache is hidden within the Red Rock Canyon BLM area. We recommend either atv/motorcycles or 4wd vehicles to get to this cache because there are off camber roads and sandy washes leading to the site. You may want to purchase a map of the area which is available at Jawbone Ranger Station as there are many roads and trails around this area.

Located southwest of the junction of highway 14 and highway 178, the "roost" consists of a massive piece of granite with many crags, crevices and caves, and is believed by geologists to be an inselberg, which is an isolated erosional remnant of a much larger granite mass. It received its name because Tiburcio Vasquez, a notorious bandit of the 1870's, used the rock as a hideaway and lookout when robbing the stages headed over Walker Pass. Today it is a nesting site for birds of prey such as the red-tailed hawk, prairie falcon, and other raptors. (Taken from Friends of Jawbone 2003 OHV map)

We have been riding motorcycles in this area for as long as we can remember, and we wanted to share one of the great views of the Red Rock valley with everyone. The cache is in a 30 caliber ammo can and the original contents include:

-Log book and pen
-Geocache site disclaimer
-Lake Powell souvenir cup
-Wahweap Marina baseball hat (new)
-Blind spot mirror
-Krazy glue (new)
-Masterlock luggage lock
-Electrical tape
-JPL sticker "Destiny STS-98 Voyage"
-American flag pin

The location of the cache is only accessible by motor vehicles from July 1st until February 1st. If you seek out this cache anytime during Feb-Jul, park your vehicles at the visible sign on the road leading up to the cache and walk the rest of the way (approx. 1 mile) In the spring and summer temperatures vary greatly in the desert, so bring plenty of water, sunscreen and please watch out for rattlesnakes.

After you find the cache, please rehide carefully as there are many visitors to this landmark. Also, take a moment to relax for a few minutes and enjoy the beautiful views of the Mojave desert, El Paso mountains and Ridgecrest.
