The Cherokee Female Seminary and the Cherokee Male Seminary opened on the same day, May 7, 1851, becoming the first institutes of higher learning west of the Mississippi River. The Female Seminary eventually became Northeastern State University in Tahlequah, OK. The Seminaries taught the Cherokees arts and philosophy. The Cherokee people were studying Latin and Greek in Indian Territory while many white Europeans could not even sign their own names. This prompted the area around the Seminaries (Park Hill) to be referred to as “The Athens of Indian Territory” by newspapers and astute government officials. Both Seminaries were devastated by the Civil War. The area was raided and plundered but was reopened after hostilities of the war were over. A fire destroyed the building in 1887. The remains of the Female Seminary today consist of only three original columns (pictured below). The site of the Seminary now houses the Cherokee Heritage Center and Art Gallery. The original land now also is home to Tsa-La-Gi Village, a living history of tribal life in the 1700’s and is the site of the Trail of Tears Drama presented every summer. This area is an interesting glimpse of the past and the struggle of a people to be free of their oppressors. Take in the history and enjoy the virtual cache.
