Geocache Description:

Dermott began as a community named "Dark". It was about 1-1/2 miles northeast of its present location. This is were the current Dermott cemetery is located and the original school called Bookout. The town moved in 1909 to the Roscoe, Snyder and Pacific Railroad as all towns thought they needed to be located on a railroad to survive. This land was donated by Pete McDermott who had established a store there in the 1890s. Sometime before 1915 the town was moved again, this time to the Santa Fe RR tracks, where cattle-loading pens were built. My father in laws grandfather, Henry Cordell Greenfield, owned the hotel in the original site ofi Dermott, then moved it to the location it was in, untill it was torn down. Dermott had the hotel, three gas stations, a feed store, post office, school, blacksmith shop and quite a few homes. This cache is located on the old Greenfield homestead. Please watch for snakes.
