Desert chimney is a brown, igneous rock chemney located in the Mojave desert near the town of Borstow, Califorina. It can be seen just east of the town as you look to the mountains. It is not too far from the historic silver mining area of Calico.
In the west when a homestead burned down the only thing left was the chimney. Well this is what happened to the spot where this cache is located. At one time a tube of igneous rock was working to the surface. It cooled slowly, which made it harder than the surrounding rock. Erosion ( not a fire ) took down every thing and left the very hard “ Desert chimney “ sticking up. It much higher than the surrounding area and you can be seen for miles. I wanted a cache that would be a little challenging but very easy to spot from a distance. I first spotted this desert chimney whild after finding the cache MOJAVE 500 #1
The cache is 9X9X 2 1/2 in tupperware panted the same color as the rock. Plese rehide deep in the rock the wends can blow very hard in this area.
It is near Interstate 15 outside of Barstow If you are in the town of Barstow, follow old Hwy. 58 east, turn left on dirt road. ( just past the drive-in,) Use your Gps to guide you to the spot. I walked in from the road leading to Lead Mountain.
Caution : As with any desert travel=== use comon sence, bring water, ware the corect shoes, Tell some one where you are going. & Take a GPS reading when you park the car.
