Geocache Description:

A little known Coral Gables landmark, the oldest historical site in the Gables.

Please be respectful of the neighborhood and the property. Pinewood (Cocoplum) Cemetery was restored after 1983 and contains the graves of some of the earliest pioneers of South Florida. There were only about 100 people living between Marathon and Jupiter in the mid to late 1800's. We debated putting a cache in a cemetery but thought that the historical nature of the site was worthwhile, as it is a very quiet and peaceful place so close to the hustle and bustle of S Dixie Highway. Take time to read some of the gravestones (most of them are in the northern portion); especially note the mortality rate of children in that era. Notable are also the graves of 3 who lost their lives in the great 1926 hurricane. Near the entrance you will notice traces of sacrifices left by followers of the Santeria religion e.g. burnt candles, fruit, pennies and other items. These are very common in Miami and if you are interested in finding out more, check the Wikipedia entry. Parking can be tricky. You might have to look for a public swale area on a property nearby.
