A cache near the former town of Brighton FL
Brighton FL, Another place that at one time was a town, and now is not.
In the early part of the 20th century, a Mr. Bright came from England to the US to make his fortune. There was a land boom going on in Florida at the time, and he figured this was the place to do it. He bought up thousands of acres west of the Kissimmee River on what was then State Road 8 (now highway 70) and was set to start his own town; Brighton Florida!
He built a luxury hotel with a swimming pool, a 'Dude Ranch' there was a small zoo started..Brighton was on it's way.....he waited....he waited some more...as the old saying goes "they stayed away in droves!"
After a few years it became apparent that Brighton was not going to be the city he had envisioned. He was able to sell some of the land to ranchers, but not enough to keep going. By the 40s he was in real trouble, and ready to sell out and go back home at any price. The hotel burned down, the dude ranch closed, the zoo moved (leaving the monkeys, who were still in the area up into the 60s)
The Lykes Brothers ended up getting the property, and their headquarters is still there (the only thing still there)
A few miles south on Highway 721 is the Brighton Seminole Reservation. Visit it while you are here. There are Indian arts and crafts, a campground, a casino and a covered rodeo arena.
Since all the land in Brighton is private property, I was forced to locate the cache about a mile east at Slough Ditch. There are four 'pull-outs' there and you will want to park at the one with a sign that says PC12. Do Not block the gate and Do Not cross the fence! There is a very small bit of 'bushwhacking' involved.
(WHEN THE CACHE WAS ORIGINALLY HIDDEN, IT WAS DESCRIBED IN THE FOLLOWING MANNOR)
