Ski Hamden! Multi-Cache

This cache has been archived.

CTReviewer: Greetings from Geocaching.com

I have been looking at caches in the area that have been temporarily disabled for a while now and it looks like your cache has been under the weather for some time. While I feel that Geocaching.com should hold the location for you and block other cachers from entering the area around this cache for a reasonable amount of time I don’t think we can do so any longer. Therefore, I have archived this cache. If you haven’t done so already, please pick up any remaining cache bits as soon as possible.

When repairs to this cache are completed and it is time to have it reposted, it will be no problem. Just drop me a note and let me know the GC waypoint number of the cache or better yet, the URL of the cache page. You will still be able to access your cache page just as before by going to your “My Cache Page” and clicking the link of your cache.

I will be more than happy to take a look at your cache again to see if it is still is within the guidelines of the Geocaching.com website for cache placement and posting.

I want to thank you for the time that you have taken to contribute to geocaching in the past and am looking forward to seeing your cache up and running in the future.

Thanks for your understanding,
CTReviewer

Geocache Description:

Ski Hamden? Well not really.

The coordinates listed above are for the remnants of a defunct rope tow that operated into the 1970’s. There really isn’t much left but I found the location interesting. If you are interested (visit link) lists more of these lost ski areas.

Park in Brooksvale Park (www.brooksvale.org) on a road of the same name. The park gates are locked ½ hour after sunset.

Brooksvale Park is on the Farmington Rail to Trails Linear Park, has a small zoo with domestic farm animals, ball fields and hiking trails. It borders the Naugatuck State Forest where the final cache can be found.

This is an offset cache. The final cache is 0.38 miles away at a bearing of 237 degrees MN. There is no need to bushwhack, as the cache is less than 250 feet off of a trail. I started on the purple trail to the left at base of hill.

The round trip from parking area is about 1-1/2 miles and is suitable for kids, dogs on a leash or mountain bikes. Snow would definitely increase the difficulty. Heavy snow, fuggetaboutit.

Just as a point of reference I calculated each degree of error at this distance is about 35 feet and each .01-mile is approx 53 feet. Because of the huge potential error factors, the cache is a very traditional type hide in open woods and I had Ma Crankee give it a trial run as well.

The hint below is the encrypted coordinates a=1 b=2 etc. Please indicate in your log if it was needed or not.
