A nice hike on the blue blazed Mattabesett Trail along the Mica Ledges in Durham.
From Route 77 in Durham, take Cream Pot Road to the end. The coordinates given above are for the parking area, where there is room for several cars. Look for the blue blazes and the trailhead. Take a right into the woods off the logging road and follow the blue blazes. This is a two part multi-cache. The coordinates for the final cache can be derived in one of two ways:
#1. Pyramid Rock
At the intersection of the red and blue trails, you will find Pyramid Rock. (A free-standing rock. You'll know it when you see it) There is a well-hidden micro containing the final cache coordinates at the top of the rock. Do not attempt this if there is rain, snow or ice or if you don't like heights or if you run out of daylight. (Add another star for terrain if you go this route.)
#2. Red Trail
Take the red trail then bushwhack a short distance to:
N 41' 26.358" W 072' 40.774"
Careful examination of the object at these coordinates will give you the final cache coordinates.
Do 1 or 2 above, then head out to the final cache coordinates. Along the way, enjoy the views from the ridge. #2 and the final cache can be found with snow cover. On your way out, take a left on to Dionigi Road to get back to Route 77.
Historical Note: If you continue South on the blue trail, you will find a cairn that is the tri-town border of Durham, Madison and Guilford. There are several stones with initials from the 1800s. Durham's borders were set out in the early 1700s. The First selectman would hire someone to periodically walk the Town's borders. Even today, the First Selectmen of Durham and Middlefield meet early in the year and hike to the Towns' borders and share a drink.
