Cod Beck reservoir was officially opened 50 years ago this month. Happy Birthday!!!
The work started in 1950 and the inauguration was carried out on the 12th December 1953.
The reservoir was built to serve Northallerton; the expected cost in 1950 was £79,000.
However, because the land they built it on was subject to constant landslips the costs soared to more than £400,000.
The embankment, or dam, consists of earth with a puddle clay core. The men working on the embankment had to puddle the clay with their feet… all 11,250 tons of it!!!
There is parking at both ends of the reservoir
The best spot is at the top near N 54°23.200 W 001°16.863. There is lots more parking further along from here also.
There is a lovely stream to paddle in and it is a favourite spot with children.
There is a well-made path right round this tiny reservoir, and the circular walk is well worth doing.
There are two entrances to the reservoir walk at the top end, one on each side of the stream. You have to decide which will suit you best!!
