Geocache Description:

Located at Fort Pemberton Park near the banks of the Tallahatchie River. The cache is a small ammo box. Please rehide cache as well or better than you found it to keep it from falling in the hands of tourists.

In the 1863 Campaign against Vicksburg, General Grant tried several approaches, one being to send troops on transports down the Tallahatchie and Yazoo Rivers. Confederate General John C. Pemberton ordered a fort to be constructed to block the enemy forces. To further hinder the enemy forces, Pemberton ordered that the steamship, the “Star of the West” be sunk in the channel.

The Battle lasted from March 11th until April 5th when the Union forces were forced to abandon that route.
