After accidentally finding this awesome spot on Mt. Judea last October we knew we had to share it with our fellow cachers. We were trying to find Sam's Throne, our state's most well-known rock climbing area. Problem was, there are no official parking areas or trails, and not a single sign to be found in the area. We got GPS coordinates from a topo map on our computer and headed up Highway 123 to try and find it. We never actually got to Sam's Throne, but we decided that it couldn't be any better than the sandstone bluff line we hiked on top of.
This cache is an ammo can hidden in an area facing Sam's Throne. The picture above was taken close to the cache site, and shows Sam's Throne so close yet so far away. The hike from the parking area is about six tenths of a mile. Parking is at N 35 52.351 W 093 02.562. Directions from the South are: From Russellville, take Hwy 7 North then turn right onto Hwy 123. Less than half a mile later you will come to the tiny community of Lurton. Zero your odometer at the rock sign commemorating the Homeplace of IC and Cornelia White Sutton, then continue up Hwy 123 for 8.6 miles to a dirt parking area on the left.
From the parking spot, follow a well-defined trail downhill and to the West. The trail will soon level out and follow along the top of the bluffs. This is one of those situations where you cannot make a beeline to the cache coordinates. If you attempt to do this, you will probably find yourself at the base of impassable bluffs. Also, there are numerous side trails splitting off and veering away from the bluff line. Follow along the tops of the bluffs where the views are the best and you will soon find yourself facing Sam's Throne with the cache directly behind you.
Once you've found the cache, you owe it to yourself to continue along the trail at the edge of the bluffs for another 10 minutes or so. You will be rewarded with an outstanding view of the Big Creek valley below. You can see for miles! At any point just turn around and retrace your path back to the parking area.
