Geocache Description:

Lambert’s Castle is one of three Iron Age hill forts in West Dorset owned and cared for by the National Trust. Rising 256 metres (840 feet) above the Marshwood Vale it is a dominant feature of the surrounding landscape.

The site is now managed to protect the archaeology and as a refuge for a number of rare species of plant and animals. Nearby properties are Coney’s Castle, Pilsdon Pen and Lewesdon Hill.

The hill fort dates from around 2,500 years ago and while its original residents and their potential assailants have long since left the present tranquillity is deceptive. From 1709 until 1947 a fair was held here. Also visible are the remnants of a horse-race track and the telegraph relay station built in 1806 as part of a chain of signal posts linking Plymouth to London during the Napoleonic War.

The cache is located on the outer north western rampart of the fort a short (0.8km) level walk from the car-park (N50 47.115 W2 53.994). The approach to the cache can be wet and muddy so make sure you have appropriate footwear.
