Park near the coordinates as provided. Count the number of black bears in the playground area. How many do you see? _______ Begin your walk on the sidewalk near the docks. Walk under the roadway and turn left following the sidewalk along the water past the convention center and the Hilton Doubletree Hotel. Walk to the tall mast you see nearby. What year was the associated bulkhead project completed? ________ Now walk toward the heart of town on Middle Street. Find the outdoor location of a collection of wooden bear carvings. How many wooden carvings are there? ______ How many total bears are depicted on the wooden carvings? ______. DO NOT COUNT any colorful ceramic bears that may be in the area (in connection with New Bern's 300th Anniversary in 2010). Continue on down Middle Street until you reach the birthplace of Pepsi. Take a right. Walk a short distance and take the time to search for the numbers that Seth Thomas provided on July 24, 1920. What are the four (4) digits? __________ Now, reverse direction and take a stroll until you find the home of the Royal Governor of the Colony of North Carolina. Looking through the gate, how many chimneys can you see on the main house? ______ Retrace your steps to Middle Street and turn left continuing in the direction you were previously walking before the Pollock Street adventures. Continue walking this direction until you see the large Federal Building across the street from the Methodist Church. How many archways are there on the first level facing Middle Street? ______ You now have all the information necessary to determine the location of the traditional cache. You are now in the historical district of New Bern. Continue the tour on your own as you walk back to your vehicle. The cache is at the following coordinates: N 35* 03.ABC W077* 02.DEF A = Total number of wooden bears in the plaza (___) = ______ B = Number of archways at the Federal Building (___) minus the number of chimneys on the home (___) = ______ C = Result when you subtract 1970 from the year the bulkhead project was completed (___), then add 4 = ______ D = The Last digit of the number provided by Seth Thomas (___) = ______ E = Number of chimneys on the home (___) minus 1 = ______ F = Number of black bears in the playground area (___) plus 2 = ______
