Note: This cache was planned and placed with intention of being a "test" for orienteering skills for boyscouts. Several scouts have used this geocache to hone their skills and learn a little about NGS benchmarks as well. Feel free to attempt it with or without GPS (using clue). I consider it educational and good practice for basic orienteering. Burgess Mountain (655 ft. elev.)is just a few miles from Eatonton, Ga. in the Oconee National Forest. Marked trailhead leads up a yellow-blazed footpath 1/4 mile to peak where 2 survey disks (benchmarks) are located. Cache is a 30mm ammo box hidden well. PLEASE! NO DIGGING and area is quite clean... help keep it that way. HUNTING is allowed here but cache is near trail. Directions: Enter marked forest service road at N33º 21.975 W083º 27.330. Park at N33º 20.910 W083º 27.008 at "P" sign. Look for an "out of place" yellow reflector on the trailhead sign. Slide it around and coords are there to lead you to the survey disks no 1. When you find either of them, note the date on them & add the 4 digit year to EACH of these coords(N33º 18.900 W083º 25.150) to find final coordinates. Example: 33º 50.000 + 2004 = 33º 52.004 083º70.000 + 2004 = 083º72.004 No GPSr? No problem! Use hint and a good compass. Consider exiting south on forest service road 3/4th mile to a stop sign. Turn right and continue ~3/4 mile to see a wooden bridge crossing the river.
