Geocache Description:

3 stage cache on the Buttermilk Heights trail in James River Park.

Best starting points are Reedy Creek Parking Area or 42nd St. Parking Area. Stage 1and 3 are micros. Final stage is an ammo can with plenty of trading items. GPS reception has made the final stage a bit of a challenge. We want this cache to be family friendly, but terrain and length of the hike might be tough for very little ones. All caches are located in areas that have little to no poison ivy, off the trail and a bit out of the way of any bike riders. Plan on hiking 1.75 to 2 miles depending upon where you start. We know this is a bit of a long hike for little ones but we think the uniqueness of the trail will keep the young ones interested. DO NOT TRY STRAITLINE PATHS FROM CACHE TO CACHE! Stick to the trail and you will arrive safe and will not lose any time. Trail short cutting is dangerous in this terrain. Trying to drive from cache to cache along Riverside Drive is also a poor choice because of the no parking, steep slopes and undergrowth. I recommend Reedy Creek Access area at the intersection of Hillside and River Road. The 42nd. St. Access Area is the closest starting point. This area has some social ills. One of them is car break ins. Suggest valuables be locked in trunk. Trail follows the steep slope along the river. All children should be closely watched. Hazards include steep slopes, drop-offs and summers bounty of poison ivy. Trail was built in the past few years by park users. Members of local cycling groups such as M.O.R.E. (www.richmond-more.org) and other park user such as J.R.O.C. (www.jroc.net) have worked hard to make and maintain this trail. Check out web sites and consider joining in on trail building projects. All trail users need to be respectful of other users. Consider bringing along a trash bag and help with cleaning up this urban gem.

The return to your starting point can be made easier by taking the trail past the final cache. Then taking the trail going down to the river near the Nickle Bridge. Then take a trail/road along the river back to either suggested starting points. Several other caches are located on the return leg of this hike. An alternative is to walk back along Riverside Dr. This is not a shortcut but the river views and local architecture make for a nice walk.

Enjoy.....BikeAnPaddleBunch
