Geocache Description:

Bring your own pencil or pen!!! This is a smaller sized container! Please place back exactly as you found it!

This area was a favorite location for the wealth of San Francisco and the surrounding areas. In 1872 Col. J.P. Jackson bought the property after a lengthy and aggressive litigation with 6-7 other men. The resort had its grand opening on May 10, 1881 and celebrities from San Francisco flocked to Napa for the celebration. For many years Col. Jackson continued as owner, though he maintained his home on Sutter Street in San Francisco.

The trip north from “the city” then involved ferrying across the bay to Oakland, then on the train to Port Costa and across to Vallejo Junction, then again on a small train to Napa, and finally by four-horse coach to the resort.

In those days some distinguished guests, including President Benjamin Harrison and Maximillian and Carlotta of Mexico, visited the resort.

The waters at the resort were known for their effervescent quality, which the Victorian era guests believed strongly in for its medicinal properties. Bathing in the waters as well as drinking the waters were considered cures for many ailments.

The resort had its own switchboard, quarry and water supply. The concrete pool doubled the supply of water available to the local fire department. The owner build an enormous rotunda for horses, he later converted part of it into a multipurpose room with the upstairs being available as guest rooms. The resort had a magnificent ballroom with phenomenal views of the Valley below. The gardens were known as tropical wonders with plants, trees and shrubs growing abundantly and easily.

As was true in the Victorian Era, the wives and children would arrive at the resort in the beginning of summer with the husbands visiting on the weekends.
The facility burned twice and now only the ruins remain. While the owner blocks all from visiting the old facility, a view of the entrance’s magnificent past still exists.
