Roundway Down (Wilts) Multi-Cache

This cache has been archived.

The Wombles: Here I am on Roundway Down, lovely morning, but unfortunately the cache has gone. This one has had an excellent innings and there are now several caches up here so I'm going to archive it. Thanks to all the visitors.

Geocache Description:

Roundway Down is a lovely ridge above Devizes and the Wiltshire countryside. There is car parking about 3/4 mile from this cache, involving a mostly flat walk through woods to the escarpment. Suitable for children, pushchairs and picnics nearby. This is an offset cache requiring the location of one step before the physical cache.

Roundway Down has excellent views, the Devizes Millenium White Horse and an Iron Age Fort "Oliver's castle". More information about the White Horse is available on our fellow cacher Bill D's excellent site called Wiltshire White Horses.

The battle of Roundway Down was a major battle of the English Civil War in 1643. Apart from the beautiful setting, the battle was remarkable for being a major defeat for the Parliamentarians and also also that Cromwell's cavalry were wiped out when they were driven off the escarpment at Oliver's castle. This battle certainly extended the war as this part of the Parliamentarians' army was devastated. The battle is described in more detail at this web site.

An Ordnance Survey map for the best parking location is shown at this web site. Parking co-ordinates are: N51°22.922', W01°59.694'.

First, go the main coordinates of this cache page and find the date at the top of the information board. Read the date as ABth(day) C(month) DEFG(year). Also find the number of guns which the Royalists captured as H.

The physical cache is at N51°22.FHA', W01°59.EAB'.

The difficulty reflects the tree cover / GPS interference and also that we hope it is well hidden. Therefore we've enclosed a spoiler picture which you may like to print and take just in case. It's in an ammo box.

This multi-cache was placed to replace the original regular cache which went missing. Hence this is a multi which may be a little more difficult to find....

The cache contains a couple of bags for rubbish, please help with "Cache In, Trash Out" on your way back to your car.
