Gitmertangen er Tromøyas nordligste og østligste punkt.
Kjør til Øyna og parker på plasser merket ”P Frilutsområde”. Følg
blåmerkede stier og skilt merket ”Sti Friluftsområde”. Cachen er
plassert i friluftsområde, og stien ut er offentlig, men det er
mange hytter i området, så ta hensyn. Det er bra mulighet for
tilgang med båt. Legg til på innsiden. Det er bademuligheter her på
sommeren, men området er absolutt vell verd et besøk også utenom
sommermånedene, når været er mer dramatisk.
Rett nord ser du Flosterøya med steder som Flosta, Narestø og
Kalvesund fort.
Her på Gitmertangen er det en minnevarde for Slaveskipet
Fredensborg som sank rett på utsiden her 1. Desember 1768. Varden
er plasser litt lenger inn ca.100 m rett syd for cachen.
Skipet gikk i triangelfart fra danmark/Norge til Vest-Afrika til
Vest India og tilbake til Danmark/Norge igjen. Hele mannskapet ble
reddet, og innlosjert i omegnen.
Til koloniene i Afrika hadde de med seg våpen, krutt, brennevin
og tekstiler. Fra Afrika til Vest-India hadde de på denne siste
turen 265 slaver foruten elfenben. Tilbake til Danmark igjen haddde
de elfenben, sukker, kanel, tobakk, bomull, mahogni og annet
treverk.
Skipet ble funnet av lokale dykkere 15.september 1974. Store
mengder gjenstander ble hentet opp. Elfenben, edel-tre, mynter,
tallerkner, segl, flasker, og andre personlige gjenstander vitnet
om lasten og dagliglivet på den tiden. I tillegg ble det funnet
store mengder fotlenker og ”slave-piper”, som et vitne over den
brutale trafikken båten var en del av.

Gitmertangen is the northern and eastern most point on the
island Tromøy. Drive to Øyna, and find a path to the tip.
Park at Øyna on the “P friluftsområde” marked parking-lot.
Follow blue-marked paths, and signs marked “Sti Friluftsområde”.
The cache is placed in public area, and the path is public, but pay
attention to the summerhouses in the area. It is easy access with
boath on the inside. It is possibilities to take a swim, but the
area is well worth a visit also in the rest of the year, when the
weather is more dramatic.
In north you see the island of Flosterøya, with places like
Flosta, Narestø and Kalvesund fort
Here on Gitmertangen, you will find a memorial stone for the
Slaveship Fredensborg, which sank right on the outside from
Gitmertangen on December 1. 1768. It is placed app. 100 m. South.
The ship was sailing in triangel between Norway/Denmark to Vest
Africa to Vest India and back to Denmark/Norway. All the crew was
saved, and lodged in the area.
To the colonies in Africa they brought guns, gunpowder, brandy
and textiles. From Africa to the Vest India, they brought slaves
and ivory. On this last faithfull trip, they brought 265 slaves.
Back to denmark, they brought ivory, sugar, canel, tobacco, cotton,
mahogny and other kind of wood.
The ship was located by local divers 15 September 1974. Alarge
amount of things were taken to shore. Ivory, wood, coins, plates,
seals, bottles and other personal belongings witnessed about the
cargo, and daily-life that time. There were also found a lot of
slave-leg-shackles and “slave-pipes” was found as a witness of the
cruel traffic the boat was a part of.
