This cache is a scenic walk on a relatively flat trail along the South Yuba River. It is a painted 6x6 plastic container in a black plastic garbage bag containing the usual trinkets.
The cache is at a site on the Buttermilk Bend trail in the South Yuba River State Park. The trail is actually a flume built to supply water for mining and agriculture in the 1800’s, and also for “…laying down dust on the Virginia Turnpike.” The first half mile of the trail is handicap accessible. Very near to the cache is what appears to be a fireplace, but there is no evidence of fire, and its shape plus other evidence lends one to believe it is an old Chinese shrine. There is evidence of substantial construction in the area and it has probably been used by various gold miners over the years. Walk about 50 yards down the main trail past the spur trail to the cache and look down to the river. Those big iron pipes are actually part of a hoist used by gold miners to pull large rocks out of the river. From mid March to mid May the wildflowers are rampant along the trail and tours are available. There are also many swimming spots where you can cool off in the summer months. (If you continue past the park boundary there is a swim hole where you can really cool off. ) Beware of poison oak; it grows well in this area. I strongly advise stopping at the Visitor’s Center first to check out history and other park activities. (And GC45F7)FTF gets a small vial containing some gold that came out of this river. There is a lot of poison oak in the area, but I have cleared a path to the cache. Think right angles.Park near the trailhead at 39°17.626 121°11.560. The cache is about a mile hike from there.
