Geocache Description:

This not a park-n-grab. It’s a nice walk in the woods: a strict theme-based cache--real bookmarks for books. PLEASE USE DAY USE PARKING AREAS. DO NOT PARK USE CAMPING AREAS FOR ACCESS TO CACHE. This is in McKinney Falls State Park. ($6.00 admission fee or state park pass. Gates locked at 10:00 PM) PLEASE READ LONGER DESCRIPTION.

This is an ultra-low-impact cache. Yes, the coordinates a little bit off; this cache was started in the old days when GPS systems were not so accurate. Bush-whacking is not needed here. Rather the opposite. The cache is a few feet from the asphalt loop trail. Look around. There is NO NEED to go through underbrush or disturb anything at all. You just need to think, look and reach. ONLY CAMPERS WITH CAMPING PERMITS ARE ALLOWED INTO CAMPING AREAS.

The cache is on the 3.1 mile paved through-the-woods walking trail: the Onion Creek Hike and Bike Trail. We very strongly urge cachers to park their cars in this parking area (or one of the other clearly marked day-use parking areas) and plan on a complete walk on the loop walk/trail. We want caching to remain a welcome activity in the park. Cachers driving (or parking) in the camping areas is very impolite and not good for the future of Geocaching. The park staff (and those camping) frown on day-use folks in the camping area. If you don’t have an hour for the nice leisurely walk (or bike ride), please skip this cache.

Driving instructions to the parking area (N 30 degrees 11.027 W 097 degrees 43.550): From the park entrance, proceed about two-tenths of a mile to a road turning right off towards the Smith Center (at just over four-tenths of a mile). There is a parking area by the Smith Center (turn right) or keep left to the parking area of the coordinates above. The parking area runs parallel to Onion Creek and a section of the trail. The Upper Falls are just downhill from the parking area.

The McKinney Falls Hike and Bike Trail is a place where you can actually read--or talk with a friend--while walking. (But listen and watch for bikes on weekends.) It’s just wide enough for two people to walk side-by-side. That’s why we thought a Bookmark Cache would be nice. In the log book (or online), please describe the bookmark you're left and . . . and mention in your post a book you read in the last year or so that you liked a lot—or a book you want to read. [Making a bookmark with your computer is very easy: Use text and picture boxes in Word or some other application. Paste in a nice quote or clip art. Hit Print and come trade, or leave some free ones for others.]

Replace the cache so it does not show from the bottom. TREAD SOFTLY OFF THE TRAIL to keep this cache site (or the VERY FEW feet between the trail and the location) as natural-looking and as undisturbed as possible. It makes it nicer for subsequent cachers if there’s not a trampled area around the cache. The cache is on the southern side of the loop trail, while the parking area is on the northern side.
