California's Gold
Episode #608
1995

Center of California

On this episode Huell takes off on a geographical adventure of the "Golden State" to find it's center.
While traveling on Hwy 99, Huell had noticed a Palm tree and a Pine tree next to each other in the center
median between Fresno and Madera. Wondering why they were there, he talks to a Caltran representative
who tells him that he had heard the trees were planted there to mark the division of "Northren" and
"Southren",California. He had nothing to substantiate that fact so Huell moves on to O'Neals, California.
Residents of O'Neal said they had heard claims that there had been a marker in a field that said,
"Center of California" but know one could remember where that marker was.
Finally Huell travels to North Fork. There, he is greated by townsfolks and given their stories of what they
know about the Center of California. Huell is taken to a spot where they are met by representives of the
Fresno State University Enginering & Surveying Dept, the Forest Service and the USGS. There they give the
finding of their search for the center of California. It is, about six miles out side of North Fork on Italian
Bar road.
At the site Huell, puts a California State Flag to mark the spot.

Today there is a nice little monument and Benchmark to designate the center of California.

That was our log for the "California's Gold" cache and pretty
much explains why we came here to place a cache. When we were
here we also picked up two other caches. (Not the Benchmark
and The Geographic Center) We'd say we hit the "Mother Lode
here in the southern part of California's Gold Country.
In honor of us picking up three caches in one spot and
picking up our 400th cache over the weekend we wanted to
place a cache here.

The cache is a large Altoid's can.
Inside are the following contents:

Two log books
The Little Engine that Could, Travel Bug
Blockbuster gift card
Wheres George dollar
Mystery Stick
$1.00 game piece from Harrah's
Jar Opener
Bad Boys Key Chain
Address Book
Bonneville - Save the Salt Flats Pin
Starbucks gift card.

The cache is camoflauged to prevent being seen to easily and
to keep it dry. Please place back in the same manner.

Since you've come this far make it a weekend adventure and check out the other caches in Oakhurst and Mariposa. They
are all fairly close and theres alot of history to be seen
by doing them.

We hope you enjoy your trip here and being in the Center of
of California

10/9/04

We, came by today to winterize the cache and to add some extra goodies. We've traded the large altoids can cache container for a large tupperware, like, camoflaged taped container. New goodies include :

California Geocache coin (Grab this one and move it on)
Grounds for Dismissal CD
Flashing Clover Pin
Snakebite Kit
Paper Weight
KFOG Sticker
Deck of Cards
Plastic Tube (This would be great for cache container)

This cache should have no problems at all making it through the winter. Please make sure the cache is closed thightly, when through.

Have fun!
Happy Caching!
