Black Mountain Traditional Cache
owl1959: This old cache has been up on the mountain since 2004 but apparently its location is too remote as it only averages less than 5 visits a year. So, we are reluctantly achieving it. Many thanks to all that made the long trek to hunt it!

Black Mountain is a 3600 foot peak, the highest on the approach trail to Springer Mountain, the southern terminus of the Appalachian Trail. It is located about midway between Nimblewill Gap and Springer Mountain. For the geocacher, this is a cache-rich area with several caches located between Black Mountain and Amicolola Falls.
The approach trail passes along the northern slope of Black Mountain at about the 3350 foot level. The cache is located a little over 400 feet off the trail, between the trail and the summit. This section of the approach trail is heavily used, particularly in the warmer months, so care must be taken to avoid being noticed when leaving the trail for the cache.
Depending on the starting point selected, the hike to the cache can be a difficult 8-mile trek up from Amicalola Falls or well under a mile from other starting points. Most of the maps I’ve seen show the approach trail passing just south of the top of Black Mountain; however, the trail was moved a considerable distance to the north as described above. Anyone planning to use the old trail to get to the cache should be aware that it has grown back to its natural state and briars were the first vegetation to recover.
The cache is in a well stocked 50-cal ammo box, hidden well enough to prevent its accidental discovery. It does contain a nice extra-large prize for the first to find. We hope you all enjoy the hunt!
