For detailed direction about the Painted Canyon - Ladder Trail refer to that cache page. For what we think are clearer directions to the general hiking area, please refer to our archived Three Towers – Good Dog Cache. The directions are still good. After finding the Painted Canyon - Ladder Trail Cache, many hikers / cachers continue along the ridge top (north,towards the antennas) on the well traveled trail. After about another one (1) mile, the trail will turn right, and head down into the main Painted Canyon. Near there, around N33°38.492, W115°59.412, you will want to depart the trail (when no other hikers are around, hopefully), and head for the cache. The name of the cache is a good hint. NO need to go down the steep slope to the west. See the pictures below. You might want to bring copies, and have a compass (and know how to use it), or know how to get a decent TRUE bearing from your GPS. At least remember that the antennas are pretty close to North from where you are. Cache size is a cylinder about 2” in diameter X 4.5” long. It is cammo’d, but as it turned out, not very well for the area. Please replace it well, as found. It has some good stuff in it, but that will soon change, so trust us. After the cache, keep heading down into the Painted Canyon, turn right at the bottom, and head back to parking. Of course, you could reverse your whole hike, and come up the Painted Canyon first, and then go down the Ladder Trail. TBM much prefers going up the Ladder Trail. I’m OK either way. Minimum distance, out to the cache and back via the Ladder Trail is about 3.8 trail miles round trip. Total climbing (either way) is about 1300 feet, and of course the same down.
