Moved on Feb. 27 2005 As per the land manager's request, the cache was moved slightly. The co-ordinates and hint have been updated. Please re-hide carefully.
Description: This cache is tantalizingly close to I-65 but yet can not be reached from the interstate. It is located on the Wabash Heritage trail a 14 mile path between Battleground and Fort Ouiatenon which follows the Wabash river and Burnett creek. I dedicate this cache to all those people on I-65 who are zooming past the trail while peering out of their car windows and wishing that they were hiking instead of stuck in a car.
Driving directions: Either park at Battleground park (N 40 30.390 W 86 50.680) and walk south or park at Davis Ferry park (N 40 28.440 W 86 52.270) and walk north. The cache is about a mile from either parking lot. The southern approach is a lot more rugged especially during the spring flooding season.
Personal story: There is a sign near the cache which I really like. In part it reads For you who have chosen to hike to this point these last 40 minutes ... imagine what the world was like ... how much of this would have experienced if your last 40 minutes were spent traveling overhead at 65 miles per hour? Ok. Perhaps a bit sappy but after hiking the trail and coming out of the quiet -- more or less -- of the woods into the roar of the traffic ... well, it makes me glad that I am walking instead of rushing.
Cache goodies: As is typical with my caches there is no big first-to-find prize however there is a nice selection of dollar to ten dollar items including many that kids would enjoy. Of course all of this is up in the air once the first several cachers find the cache.
Other caches:If you hike north from Davis Ferry to Battleground (or vice-versa) you can also find my caches
WHT: Not so north (Bridge Out!) (CGHD7Y) and WHT: North (GCH160) as well as a cache that is not mine -- the Battleground rock cache (GCECED).
Please note: Permission to place the cache was granted by Kathy Smith of the Tippecanoe County Parks department. She wishes for me to remind everyone that the Wabash Heritage trail is a narrow path in woods that are surrounded by private property. Thus, while the cache is tantalizingly close to highways do not trespass. Instead please park at either the Battleground or Davis Ferry parking area and use the trail.
