Terminal Zero?
A brief background. In 1919 the Australian government offered a £10,000 prize for the first Australian to fly from England to Australia.
The Australian entry of brothers Keith and Ross Smith, with Jim Bennett and Wally Shiers, took off in their Vickers Vimy aircraft G-EAOU on 12 November from Hounslow, England in foggy weather "totally unfit for flying". Both Smiths were pilots who had flown in the First World War. Ross was first pilot, while his brother Keith was navigator and co-pilot. Bennett and Shiers served as mechanics.
Dangerously short of fuel the Vimy almost fell into Darwin" at 3:40 p.m. on December 10th. The Vimy had taken 27 days and 20 hours, arriving at Darwin's Fannie Bay Airstrip after almost 136 hours in the air.
Over the years a number of memorials have been erected in Australia to commemorate the achievement of the Smith brothers and their crew. Naturally, one marks their first touchdown in Australia, but a number of significant memorials exist in South Australia, and both the original aircraft and the grave of the Smiths may be found around Adelaide.
This cache celebrates the achievements of these four brave Australians and the families who supported them. The hairs on the back of my neck always rise when I think that they flew here in that plane.
The cache is hidden. Well hidden. Parking should not be a problem.
