A short, but steep hike to a ridge above Kawainui Marsh. Magnificent views of Kailua and Olomana.
Park your car and look for an entrance into the forest on the western (mauka) side of the road near Waypoint 1 (N21 23.257, W157 45.812).
The hike starts inauspiciously in an area occupied by paint-ballers, motocross enthusiasts and vehicular exoskeletons. (This isn't called "Dump Road" for nothing). The quickest way to navigate the maze of bike trails and rusting refrigerators to follow the wide jeep trail from Waypoint 1 into the forest, choosing the left fork at every opportunity. Within a few minutes you should find yourself on a deeply rutted road rising SE out of the forest towards your first vista opportunity at Waypoint 2 (N21 23.209, W157 45.846).
Continue up the "road" for several hundred yards. When you get to Waypoint 3 (N21 23.128, W157 45.967) look for a foot trail on the left of the road. Leave the road and follow this trail west, directly up the ridge. The trail is steep and overgrown in places, but it never strays more than a few feet from the ridgeline, and is never dangerous.
In about 40 minutes you should reach the main ridge of the Oneawa Hills at Waypoint 4 (N21 23.128, W157 46.232). Turn left for an easy walk to the cache site and a magnificent vista of Kawainui Marsh, Olomana and Kailua.
The cache is a lock box under a few rocks behind you as you look toward Kailua. It is only a few feet from the summit.
Adventurous hikers can continue their exploration of the ridge using the trails that head southwest from the cache location and north from Waypoint 4.
