Glory Hole Multi-Cache

This cache has been archived.

Krypton: As there's been no cache to find for months, I'm archiving it to keep it from continually showing up in search lists, and to prevent it from blocking other cache placements. If you wish to repair/replace the cache sometime in the future, just contact us (by email), and assuming it meets the guidelines, we'll be happy to unarchive it.

Geocache Description:

A 2-part cache: a virtual at the “Glory Hole”, followed by a micro cache with a logbook where you can record your visit.

The main part of this cache is located at the Monticello Dam overlook area. The dam was built in the 1950s creating Lake Berryessa. This dam does not have the type of spillway that you see at many dams where the water flows over the dam when the reservoir is full; instead this reservoir has a concrete stand-pipe overflow shaped at the top like an upward facing Morning Glory flower. The locals call this “the Glory Hole”. When water overflows into the Glory Hole, it is an awesome sight to behold, especially if you are standing right next to it at N38° 30.725' W122° 6.291'. Thus you may want to visit this site when the water is flowing into the Glory Hole. This is generally occurring when the website http://cdec.water.ca.gov/cgi-progs/queryDaily?BER shows the water level to be higher than 440ft and the outflow is registering in the hundreds or thousands cfs (cubic feet per second). Even if no water is spilling into the Glory Hole, the site is interesting. If you want to peek at what you are likely to see, then look at: http://www.trophybassonly.com/id56.htm

To find the log book for this cache you have to travel less than a mile to a lower elevation along the creek that leads away from the dam. The micro cache container is slightly smaller than a 35mm film canister and is hidden from view under a small rock at N38° 30.9AB' W122° 5.3CD’, where the numerals A, B, C, and D are determined using the information on the black sign at the cache coordinates (about waist height). On this sign there is raised lettering of text and numeric information. Add all the individual numerals together, multiply the result by 3; then subtract one to obtain AB. Count the number of times the word “the” appears in the text of the sign and subtract that from AB to obtain CD.

GPSr Coordinates can bounce a bit near the micro. Also note that there is Poison Oak nearby - you do not need to touch any plants to find the micro. Bring your own pen and please re-hide at the exact same spot in the same way.
