A short but challenging hike to a classic alpine lake.
The cache is a small white tupperware type container a little larger then a 35 mil film can please rehide carefully.
This steep trail leads to a striking amphitheatre holding Rawson Lake. On a hot day you'll appreciate the shaded ascent through the forest.
Follow the rolling Upper Kananaskis Lake Trail for the first 1.2 km. Just past Sarrail Creek waterfall, Rawson Lake trail branches to the left. In a quick change of pace the trail begins to switchback relentlessly up the forested slope. By the time you emerge from the forest and arrive at the lake, you'll be ready to plunge in.
In early summer the alpine meadows bordering the lake are ablaze with wildflowers.
In the shadow of the cliffs snow banks linger until mid July, giving walkers the bonus of late blooming Alpine buttercups that appear to have been dipped in glossy yellow paint. More meadows at the head of the lake are reached by a faint trail across steeper side slopes.
Along the left shore you can explore the open rock slopes where you might hear the high-pitched squeak of a pika or glimpse one hard at work. Pika's collect and dry a stash of grass which they rely upon to get them through the winter.
OPTION FOR THE VERY FIT
It doesn't look like much from down below but...
Start from the far west end of the lake and climb 365 vertical metres at the forest edge. Above treeline is a spectacular piece of grassy ridge sandwiched between rock towers, so you can't walk too far in either direction. What you've come for is the fantastic view of Upper Kananaskis Lake
