A cache to introduce you to the first real schoolhouse in Tantie/Okeechobee
When people began to settle here in the early 1900s they naturally had young'uns and of course these young'uns needed book learnin'. The townspeople got together and built a palmetto shack on Peter Raulerson's place and got Mary Steffee in from Bassinger to teach. (or was that Basinger?) Doc Hubbard helped out sometimes when Mary couldn't make it in, but they needed a real sure enough 'School Ma'arm' here. Peter Raulerson looked through some ads from up north and found one from a lady named Tantie Huckabee. She seemed to be just what the town was looking for and willing to travel. After she was contacted, she took the job and soon arrived ready to teach. When she saw the palmetto shack she threw a fit and immediately put in to have a real building put up, and she got it too. In 1909 the town built her a frame building and Tantie Huckabee had her schoolhouse. She taught here for many years and also put in for and got a post office built. Folks around these parts thought so much of her that they named the post office (and the town) after her.
The old school was built on what is now south Parrott Avenue, right across from the Arby's restaurant, but now sits west of town across from the civic center. It has been restored and made into a historical museum open to the public. It has -Very- restricted hours and will not be open when you visit..unless you visit between 8 am and 1 pm on a thursday!
The cache is in a brown pill bottle and is at ground level. It is along the fenceline on the west side of the site...NOTE: cache container has been replaced with a more waterproof container as of 6/29/04.
