Geocache Description:

Out in the Lamar Valley of Yellowstone National Park is a trail that begins from the main road and crosses Soda Butte Creek on a footbridge. Parking is at N 44 Deg. 52.161 min. W 110 deg. 09.970. The trail climbs and transverses several successive benches of the Lamar River and comes to a Trail Sign marking an intersection. The Sign is about 3 miles from the road. I have only traveled this trail in the winter on cross-country skis. Of course the scenery is fantastic.

I went out on the trail in late January. I skied at a safe distance past a Bison. High on a ridge to my left, several Bull Elk went higher while nervously watching me. Ahead of me were tracks of at least two Coyotes that previously used the tracks set by earlier skiers. One must have been carrying a fresh Elk leg bone that got too heavy and dropped it on the trail. Similarly, a little further on a piece of Elk jawbone was dropped on the trail. Without noticing where it joined the trail, footprints showed that a large Wolf had joined the procession ahead of me. I guess that is why the Elk were nervous and the Coyotes decided to drop their load. The tracks went on for a couple of miles beyond my destination, which was the Trail Sign.

The sign overlooks Cache Creek. I thought the name would be interesting to Geocachers so I decided to post this virtual cache. As any Geocacher knows, physical caches are not allowed in National Parks. When I mentioned geocaching to some people at the Yellowstone Institute, I was told the early physical geocaches resulted in documented resource damage, hence the ban.

I would be interested in reading about other treks on this trail in all seasons. To verify that you made it to The Sign, log the find and e-mail me what is written on the Cache Creek Trail side of The Sign. Enjoy.
