Snakes! Revamped
BE AWARE OF your surroundings. I'd rather everyone be overly cautious. I didn't actually see any snakes, but I set this in January; not the season for snakes to be out. 12/11/04: I redid this in Nov-Dec and again did not see any snakes.

Bring a stick or pole to tap the ground in front of you as you walk to startle any snakes before they startle you.

I was out with my wife recently hunting out a cache when a rattler rattled at her as she was about to climb upon a rock. I never saw her move so quickly. The snake was a bit less than two inches in diameter. I couldn't determine its length as it immediately wriggled out of sight into a depression beneath a large boulder. So, beware!

12/11/04: This newly designed loop will take you through a small part of the Lake Hodges trail system and over a couple hills. A steep climb awaits you at the end. You can find the trailhead and parking at the following coordinates.

N 33° 02.761
W 117° 05.441
From the trailhead, make for the posted coordinates, the first waypoint. On the way, you'll pass a southward bound trail which leads to a little creek and a waterfall. If you have some time, take the detour. It is a nice and surprising find out here.

At the first waypoint, you'll find a six-digit number on a gray metal tag. Use this number to determine the coordinates of the next waypoint.
ABCDEF = the 6-digit number
N 33° 02.6BD
W 117° 05.F7E
My apologies to everyone for the expansive dog toilet that you will find along this section of the hike. You'd think watching for snakes would be bad enough. But the dogs aren't to blame; it's their owners who bear the shame for this affront.

Although you may want to watch your step, do try to enjoy the hills and scenery along the way. You'll even find side trails where others have trekked into the hills. If you have the time and the inclination, try a short exploration and see where it takes you.

If you do find a neat area that looks perfect for a cache, remember that while caches are allowed now in Lake Hodges, they have to be approved. Any caches that are off-trail will stand little chance. See the posted signs for more information.

At this waypoint, you'll find a two-digit number and a six-digit number on gray metal tags for use in determining the cache location.
ABCDEF = the 6-digit number
G = C + D - E - F
N 33° 02.44A
W 117° 05.4GB

The cache, a camouflaged ammo box about 12" x 4" x 7", is hidden quite well in the rocks but should be obvious to someone looking for it. It's a bit off trail, and a little bushwhacking may be involved to reach it.

Although it has a better view then previously, it is now hidden in an area more likely to contain snakes, I should think. Bring a stick or cane to tap the ground in front of you and near the cache.

There is a steep climb involved in this hike. A climb of about 200 feet in a fairly short distance. Although the entire walk is about a mile, take your time and plenty of water.

When rehiding the cache, take a moment to look at it and ensure it is hidden very well so that muggles will not see any part of it from any direction. Thank you much in advance.

You may be a little turned around after finding this cache. You could return the way you came, but it is much shorter to head toward the first set of coordinates below. When you've reached the first set, head for the second. (Use the most recent six-digit number for calculations.) There will be some waist high brush as you near the second set of coords. Then you can simply head toward the trailhead from there. Good luck!
First set:
N 33° 02.38E
W 117° 05.4A0
Second set:
N 33° 02.35B
W 117° 05.3G2
