Geocache Description:

Please note the coordinates given are for a car park in Holme Chapel, Cliviger, Burnley. From here you will find the clues that will reveal the location for the hidden cache.

The cache is hidden at Sheddon Clough on the Limestone Hushings Trail. It’s a regular cache contained within an Army Amo box, located at an elevation of 1009ft.

There are several ways to approach this cache. If you want a longer walk, you can park at the car park, collect your clues and then set off on one of many footpaths to Sheddon Clough (it’s about 2 miles away, mostly up hill). Or you could drive to the Maidens Cross car park on the Long Causeway (0.5 miles walk from there).

The ratings assume you are driving to each car park, if walking then change to a 3/3.

Alternatively, make your own way!

The numbers you need to make up the cache coordinates can all be found quite easily a short distance from the car park. Allow about 15 mins to collect them from three key village institutions.
The final coordinates are:
N53 45.ABC W002 09.DEF

Use the clues below to collect the numbers and substitute for the letters.

1. Start at the place used to refresh the body. Look to the black door and note the number E99.
2. Next go to the place used to refresh the mind. If you were to ring them, the number would be 012B2 421395.
3. Next go to the place used to refresh the spirit. If you needed the Vicar you would ring 42847D.
4. Walk up the path to the Church, all the following can be easily seen from the path. William Higgin of Overtown died F8 years old.
5. William Collinge JP died October 21st 189C.
6. George Church Lancaster died December 1st 19A3.

Now you have your full coordinates for the cache, make your way to the Limestone Hushings. If you park at N53 45.372 W002 09.745 and set off from there, you will see some of the features in the photos below that will indicate you are on track.

The Long Causeway is one of the most ancient highways in Europe; it is a track along which the Romans marched, followed some years later by pack horses and 18th century wool merchants.

The Hushings are the remains of a wide open-cast site used 200-300 years ago. The land was swilled away to extract limestone boulders deposited in the drift by the last glaciers of the Ice Age. The limestone was then burnt to quicklime in the field kilns built from the rejected sandstone. You will see huge piles of rejected sandstone all over the open cast site, and many of these have now grassed over resembling a strange ‘Telly Tubby’ landscape.

Inside the cache, at the time of placing, were:
