Geocache Description:

In Patriots Park, Route 114 North, Portsmouth, RI.

I adopted this old RI cache in 2021. I am pleased to keep it going!

Approaching from the south, follow RI 114 north (West Main Road). Immediately after the turn for Bristol, watch for a turnout and parking area on the left.

Approaching from Bristol, take 114 South over the MT. Hope Bridge, and follow 114 south (Bristol Ferry Rd, and then West Main Rd). Although you will pass by the park, you cannot reach the parking area without turning around. When you see the sign for Green Animals on the right, or the Portsmouth Transfer Station on the left, turn around, and proceed as described above. You are very near the Heritage Park cache. You might want to do that one first. If you do, be sure to read the historical markers there, which give a good description of the troop movements and positions during the Battle of RI.

Approaching from Tiverton/Fall River, take Route 24 south onto Aquidneck Island, and watch for the exit marked "Patriots Park." Turn right at the bottom of the exit ramp and watch for signs for 114 South to Newport. Do not go over the Mount Hope Bridge. You must turn right just before the bridge and then left to pass under the bridge, then right at the light onto 114 south. Then proceed as in previous paragraph.

When you finally get to the parking area, get out and read the historical markers, which honor the 1st RI Regiment. This regiment consisted entirely of freeborn African-Americans and freed slaves. The 1st RI held a position near this spot on the American right flank during the Battle of Rhode Island in August, 1778.

This little park is well maintained, but is so seldom visited, that when I stopped here recently, a lady pulled over to ask if I needed help.

Follow your GPS into the wooded portion of the park.

Accessibility in snow - May be difficult in deep snow.
