“The first people to come to Mahwah were known as the Delaware or Lenni Lenape Indians. For one year, (1712-1713), some Tuscarora Indians also camped in Mahwah. The Lenni Lenape Indians called Mahwah, “mawewi,” meaning “an assembly where streams and paths meet.” Thus, Mahwah gets it’s name from being a meeting place at the conjunction of several transportation routes. The first person of record to settle in the wilderness of Mawewi was the widow, Blandina Bayard, who established an Indian Trading Post in the year 1700. On August 10, 1700, the Indians gave her a deed for Mahwah, Oakland, and Franklin Lakes in exchange ‘for divers good causes and several kindnesses received, but especially for sundry goods and wares…to the value of one hundred and twenty pounds current money of New York.’ Blandina Bayard was 49 years old at the time and had 5 children.”From the Book: From Pioneer Settlement to Suburb: A History of Mahwah, New Jersey, 1700-1976 By: Henry Bischoff and Mitchell KahnJust as the early settlers were faced with immediate tasks on Mawewi’s wilderness land, so too will you. You can leave your shot and gunpowder at home, but do be prepared to pull up stakes and remove rock. Blandina was a hardworking pioneer, and a very kind person--with a penchant for “divers good causes.” We KNOW that she would have loved the Geocacher’s Environmental Cause: Cache In Trash Out.Thar’s some fun to be had for yer two-legged young’uns, so bring’em along. …Sorry, no four-legged critters. Thar’s outhouses out back anytime you need ‘em, and when the weather’s warm and yer a’thirstin,’ thar’s a bounty of fresh drinkin’ water. If you come to Blandina’s Trading Post at the right time, you might even get served up some good eats--for a fee.Would you mind keepin’ food out of the Cache? Don’t want to attract animals to the area. Take time to explore other happy trails in this area. When you set your course for Blandina’s, don’t forget to send us yer comments ‘n’ mug shots!
