Brent knoll is an outcrop of the nearby Mendip Hills. 137 metres (449 feet) high it affords magnificent views of the Mendips and Chedder Gorge to the north east, the Polden Hills to the south, Glastonbury Tor to the east and the Bristol Channel and Wales to the west. The Romans named it “The Mount of Frogs”. (I think back then the Knoll was an island poking out of marshland).
Travellers on the M5 will not have failed to notice this prominence on the Somerset Levels. The village of Brent Knoll wraps around the western side and has its own website promoting the Knoll and the Village. It includes an interesting history, from primitive man to the 20th Century and is well worth a read if you are planning to come.
There are a number of paths from which the Knoll can be tackled. The following is only a recommendation. Ultimately the way up is your choice (as long as you stick to the Public Footpaths).
Limited parking can be found outside St Michael’s Church at N51’15.106 W002’57.234. Sunday morning cachers, and in the tourist season, you may find that you will have to park on the main road. This will only add a few minutes to your walk. From the parking coordinates you will be able to see the start of the Public Footpath. If it is wet then please be careful, the first and last 150m or so can be very muddy and slippery. I should also say that this path is not appropriate for pushchairs/buggys. Make your way up the path and let the GPS point the way. The site is quite “obvious” even from distance and if you all find it too easy then I may move it later. The cache itself is a green tupperware type container. Once you’ve found it, then make your way to the top of the Knoll and enjoy the views. I’ve not put any pictures of the views on here because that would spoil it. It’s well worth the effort!
