On the coast road between Burnham on Sea and Brean is the small
village of Berrow. At the northern end of Berrow is the picturesque
church of St Mary’s, which is set back from the main road and just
in front of the Sand Dunes, with a golf course behind.
Parts of the old church date back to 1150AD. Inside there are items
of historical interest, whilst outside the headstones tell their
own stories of sorrow, fame and fortune. Lord Cave the Earl of
Richmond and once a Lord Chancellor is buried here. In days long
past the the Tower of Berrow church was kept permanently
whitewashed to serve as a landmark and warning to ships coming up
the channel. Unfortunately in the days of sail many a fine ship met
with an untimely end on the sandbanks, one such ship was the
“Nornen” a Norwegian barque. She ran aground in March 1897 and even
today her wreck can be seen at low tide to the northwest of the
church.
The Cache is a 35mm container and is reasonably well hidden from
the passing public.
