Geocache Description:

The cache is a micro placed in the center of Olean. This usually a very busy place so a little stealth should be used. This should be an easy find, I want to show cachers the great city of Olean. Much goes on in this park during the year. Take a few minutes to check out the park. There are a few interesting items here.

In the early days when our country was being settled the homes or log cabins then, were often built around a square, or as we know it today, a park. Lincoln Park was the center of Hamilton as Olean was called in 1804. On Nov. 11 1817 the name changed to Olean Point and eventually to Olean. The land for the park was given to the settlers by Major Adam Hoops who first settled here way back in 1804. It was not called Lincoln Park until after the assassination of President Lincoln in 1865. The women of the neighborhood kept the park clean of debris, planted flowers shrubs and trees. Though the park has diminished in size it is used by many. Some for resting, others for picnics or feeding birds and squirrels Much beauty has been added to the park by our city parks dept. There arre picnic table and benches in the summer that are frequently used. If one would like to take the time to visit the three historic monuments placed by prominent patriotic organizations it would reveal some of our historic background. In 1904 the Rock City Stone Boulder with an engraved plaque to Major Hoops and several other Revolutionary soldiers from Olean by the Chapter of the daughters of the American Revolution. The monument in the center of the park where the walks meet was given by the daughters of Union Veterans of the Civil War. It is a beautiful memorial to those men who fought in the Civil War The third monument is one that is worthy of taking time to view. It was erected by the Gold Star Mothers. There are stone benches surrounding it at intervals with the inscriptions of Freedom of Speech, Freedom of Religion, Freedom from Fear and Freedom from Want. Also the old city fire bell has been placed on the south west side of the park. We should be very proud and happy that we have a lovely park in the center of the city for all to enjoy. With the recent built Gazebo it is a popular place for wedding and many have been held there. One might say it is the heart of Olean. Businesses and Churches surround the park and it's beauty can be enjoyed by everyone. Hopefully it can be preserved for future generations.
