Sandusky County Park District

This cache is near the new White Star Wetlands Area.

Wetlands

Do you remember learning about the Great Black Swamp while you were in school? The area stretched from Sandusky, Ohio to Fort Wayne, Indiana and from Perrysburg, Ohio to Findlay, Ohio, an area roughly the size of Connecticut. The area was mostly a water covered thick forest with giant oaks, elms, cottonwoods, sycamores and other large trees. Traveling through this impenetrable watery forest was nearly impossible. The water was horse belly deep in some areas, oozing mud in others and there were biting flies, mosquitoes, snakes, wolves and wildcats to deal with. The native americans in the area did not go into the swamp except to hunt as it was easy to become hopelessly lost. The swamp was created by glaciers that retreated during the last Ice Age.

In 2003 the Park District started work on the wetlands area of White Star Park. Since work began a number of species of animals have been newly observed in this once dry woodland. Small fish including small bluegill have been spotted. Many types of amphibians can be seen and heard. Their croaking can become very loud. Different types of waterfowl and water birds including geese, mallards, wood ducks, teals and blue herons have been spotted. Animals such as deer, rabbit, squirrel, chipmunk, racoon, skunk and other are abundant. And of course song birds and raptors are plentiful.

You must park in the lot near the cache.

In warm weather wear PLENTY OF REPELLANT. If you write mosquito nursery, factory or other such thing on your log, remember this is a swamp and You Were Warned.

We would like to hear what wildlife you saw on your adventure. Please note anything exciting in your online log.

NOTICE** The area of the cache is not in a hunting area although the area to the west of the cache (Across the large ditch)including the dikes and trails are within a by-permit hunting area. This area is closed to all activities except hunting after October 14th. There is no hunting allowed in spring and summer. Hunting is only allowed by-permit in open seasons in the fall and winter.
